Goldfield - Train Ride & Mystery Shack (part four)

One of the things we KNEW we had to do when we got to Goldfield was to take Bubba for a ride on the train. He was so excited!

Did you know they had CFLs in the wild west? You learn something new every day!

After the train we wandered over to a building they called the Mystery Shack. In the waiting area for the tour to start there were some really neat old doors, perfect for photo backgrounds.

In fact, after we had been waiting a bit, a couple of photographers came by with a girl to do her senior portraits there.

Bubba is showing off the orange he got at the Bordello. Hopefully that is the ONLY thing my boy ever picks up from one of those places!!!

I took some photos of my sister in law too.

And of course, the husband.

He kept giving me the worst fake smiles! It reminded me of a Facebook conversation my friend Danea and I had about saying "SAY CHEESE" before taking photos. I told him to say "SPHINCTER" instead and it worked. I got a real smile! Crude but effective.

The boy insisted in playing in the dirt. We must have waited for that tour guide for half an hour before the photographer told us that we could just walk ourselves through if we wanted. We decided to take that option.

It was so weird! You knew that the house was built crooked in person, you knew why things were hanging at the strange angles, but still you found yourself oddly out of sorts and with a slight sense of vertigo. It was so hard to walk through there!

My sister in law looks like she is about to fall here but she's actually walking upright!

In order to get to the exit, you had to walk over this:

That's one of the old mine shafts that's been covered over with a thick sheet of plexiglass. The effect was further hightend because we were in a dark building and the only light source besides the lights going down the shaft was the sunlight shining between the boards of the exit door. There was a narrow, metal walkway (about a foot wide) across the middle of this. You had to walk over the middle of the mine shaft to reach the exit. You couldn't go around because the shaft was as wide as the building.

Dude, I don't even step on grates in the sidewalk or parking lots because I have a fear of them collapsing! This was AWFUL!!! I held my breath and tried to tread as lightly as possible as quickly as possible to make it over.

Terrible.

After we left there we were going to try panning for gold but they were closed. We ended up checking out the gift shop, where I bought a jar of prickly pear jelly, and then heading home. I would definitely recommend this as a place to take out of state visitors for some kitschy fun!

How totally cool is that?! I´d so love to check it out myself! Would Arizona be a good place for a visit to the United States?

I was randomly looking for some pictures of Goldfield (I moved to AZ recently, saw Goldfield on a bored weekend, and wanted to take some photos back for Xmas)- anyway, I stumbled on your blog, and I'm not a big commenter, like, ever, but I just had to say-

You have a beautiful family. You seem like a lovely person. Best wishes.

That is all.

Also Merry Christmas, or Happy Hanukkah, or just plain Have a Good Day.
