Autumn?

This morning, as I walked down the stairs from my apartment, I was struck by actual cool air OUTSIDE for the first time in months.

Fall is coming!

I love autumn. It's my favorite season. We finally get relief from the heat of summer, the holiday season, and just a more general air of festivity fills everything around you, we are exposed to more of the snuggly oranges, reds, and browns that I favor in my home decorating, and you get to wear actual long pants and blouses with sleeves without feeling like you're going to pass out from heat stroke.

And I live somewhere that autumn lasts for about two months. It's so unfair!

Now summer, which I HATE with a passion, lasts like seven months here. It's gross, it's sticky, everything outside dies and withers to a dull yellow color, you can't get into the car without thinking about getting into an oven, and basically, the heat just drains the desire to do anything from your system.

For the past month or so, I've been reading in other people's blogs about how excited they are for fall, how the leaves are changing colors (that will never happen here, BOO), how the air is getting cooler, and I've been terribly jealous. Heck, I've read in the blog of someone I know lives mere miles away how she is preparing for fall already. I go to the mall, the grocery store, the craft store, and everywhere it's fall, fall, fall!

How on earth am I supposed to get myself in an autumn mindset when it's over 100 degrees outside?

Every year, as soon as my birthday passes, I start rooting for the arrival of Halloween. Not only is it a kick butt fun holiday, second favorite only to Christmas, it really cements the arrival of the cooler weather here. That's right folks - no sleeves for another month and a half!

Every year, September arrives and I get grumbly that other places are celebrating "football weather" and pretty much give up hope on ever wearing a cute jacket over my jeans. Then, finally, that morning arrives where the air is crisp instead of muggy, and I am reminded that YES! Once again autumn will not let me down!

Of course, I have no idea how hot it's gotten by this point in the day. That was the worst, when I was a kid - the days where it was so cold in the morning you had to wear a coat to school but it was broiling hot by afternoon, so you had to lug the stupid thing around. That's living in the desert for you!
