Say Hello to Charley

Friday, I woke up to a horrible charley horse at about 4:30 in the morning. I've been waking up in the mornings feeling like my right leg was about to cramp, but I would just flex my foot to stretch the muscle, and then I'd be okay to go back to sleep. Friday morning, however, I didn't wake up in time I guess, or else it just progressed too fast for me to do anything about it, because, try as I might, I could not make my foot flex to save my life. It was an awful feeling, to know what I needed to do, but to be unable to make my body respond, and finally, when the pain got to be too much, I actually yelled out in pain.

Luckily, my husband was walking by (the man does NOT sleep, at least not at night) and he ran in to see what was wrong. When I started screaming about my leg he realized what was wrong and was able to force my foot so that my leg would stretch, and that relieved the pain. When I got out of bed almost three hours later, that leg was STILL sore, it had cramped that badly.

It made me remember a time when I was 14, and I got a charley horse for the first time. That one also happened in the middle of the night, and my mom came running in to find me screaming in pain about my leg. She stretched it out, and got the cramp to stop, but then she proceeded to beat my ass. Why? Well, the only time SHE ever got those was when she was pregnant with me, and I better not have been pregnant!!!

Yeah, good times.

Ok...I've a fellow pea and I've been following your blog for awhile. I just had to chime in and say I had those BAD with both my pregnancies. My relief (besides a good level of potassium AND magnesium which you could get in pill form to avoid the bananas) was to step onto a cold floor asap. I have tile in my bathroom and the cold floor gave me almost instant relief with the exception that the muscle was sore afterward like yours was. I hope you find relief!
