Confession Time - Yellow Seersucker Edition

Yup. I'm a sucker for seersucker, particularly yellow seersucker.

Particularly when said yellow seersucker comes in the form of baby dresses.

This is odd because A) I absolutely loathed when my own mother would dress me in yellow, B) Pink is my favorite color, not yellow, and C) I have a son so I shouldn't even be looking at dresses. Yet, I find myself drawn to these sweet little girl dresses everywhere I go. I've banned myself from even glancing in the direction of the racks of girl clothes at the Goodwill because it never fails; there will be at least one item over which I will spend several minutes lamenting not having a reason to buy. It's terrible.

I've made no secret that we want to start trying to have a baby here soon. I'm scared that I'll want it too badly and therefore make it harder on myself in the long run. I'm sure you've all known at least one person who wanted a baby so badly but suffered through infertility, medications, doctors, experts, procedures, etc, only to give up on their dream and then almost immediately GET FREAKING PREGNANT. It's like the stress of wanting it so badly taxes your body to where it just isn't able to do what it needs to do.

Then there was that whole miscarriage business last summer. Was it me? Was it the IUD? Who can say?

I do know that I love love love my son. I also know that I would love love love to have a daughter too. I figure with the second baby, it's a win/win situation. If I have another boy, then Bubba has a built in best friend. We can get a little bit more mileage with stuff through being able to hand them down. They can share a room for longer. I already know all this boy stuff because I've done it! Piece of cake.

If I have a girl... well then, I have a girl! I get to make hair bows and dress her in ridiculous tutus. I'll have a built in reason to add even more pink and glitter to my life. I'll finally get to do all the girly mother and daughter things I missed out on as a kid.

See? No matter the gender of the second baby, we win! But... there's always that damn yellow seersucker.

So, to tilt the odds slightly more in favor of me having an excuse to start a collection of little yellow seersucker dresses, I'm digging out ALL the old wive's tales of gender prediction. After I was pregnant with Bubba, I went back and I had, without knowing, done everything in favor of having a boy. This time, I'm going to see how much of the girl stuff I can squeeze in there.

Go ahead, laugh. It's all for fun. If it works, I have a fun story to tell, and if it doesn't, then I have a cautionary tale for others who want to try it in seriousness. Either way I end up with a sweet little baby, so what's the harm?

So, starting today, no more carbonated beverages, bananas, potatoes, caffeine, spinach, red meat, oranges, watermelon, or cakes/cookies (*sniff*). I also need to cut way back on commercially processed foods and salt. I will be increasing my dairy, egg, rice, grapefruit juice, carrot, fish, chocolate, corn, broccoli, and kale consumption. There's a sign on my fridge to remind me lest I forget. I've checked the Chinese Lunar Calendar to see which months would give me the best chances. My husband got a note on his bathroom mirror telling him to lay off the caffeine. I've even researched the best "positions" (seriously, who comes up with this stuff???) for doing the, *AHEM*, deed.

Do I believe it? Nah, not really. God decides who should be in our families, after all. But, if I can skew the odds in my favor, well, no harm done! HA!

I think, from what I've heard, that if you want a girl you have sex when you ovulate {rather than before} and that way, by the time the egg drops the boy sperm will have died and the girl sperm will make the connection. Apparently, little boy sperms are swim quick but die quick too...and little girl sperms believe slow and steady win the race. I've known several people who have planned their family this way...and they swear by it. Good luck!

Little girls are sweet. I know what you mean, though... Secretly, I'd love a little boy. Although I could totally see the benefit to either. Babies in general are just awesome.

A friend of mine was trying to conceive a girl and apparently there's a way to, um, do the deed to encourage little girl sperm to reach the egg first. Apparently the X-chromosome-containing sperm are often slower but more resilient, so you should do it a couple days before you ovulate, so more of those are left. Sort of made sense to me when she explained it... But she went on to have another boy, anyway.

Yeah, way more than you'd ever want to know about conceiving a specific gender.

I think it works. Old wives tales, for the most part, have stuck around for the main reason that Old wives seemed to be pretty much on the up and up in what they were talkin about. Good Luck !!

Agreed with the others!
Worked for us without even knowing (until after.)
For a girl, you need to do it before ovulation, so that by the time the egg comes, the sperm that are left are mostly girl sperm.
Good luck!
