A Dozen Years Later

In 1999, I worked at a call center as a Roadside Assistance operator for General Motors.  Late in the year I was promoted to the help desk where I met the core group of people I still call friends to this day.  In January of 2000, one of the girls had a birthday so we all went to TGIFridays to celebrate. She also invited some of her other friends who did not work with us.  There was this one guy she pointed out to me.  Apparently he had a big crush on her friend from school.

They dated very briefly, like in weeks, and that was that.

One night in March, we were out at a club and that guy was there.  My friend introduced us and we began to talk.  We talked all night, until the club closed.  Since I was the only one in the group who did not still live with my parents, generally we would go back to my apartment and hang out after.  We invited that guy back with us.  While everyone else fell asleep on floors and couches (ah, to be 22 again!  NOT) we stayed up literally all night talking.

We stayed up all the next night talking too.  In fact, for the next few weeks we spent a lot of nights just sitting and talking.  I think he stayed the night about six or seven times before he ever tried kissing me.  HA!

Well, we never actually had the "define the relationship" talk because I didn't want to scare this guy away, and well, he's a guy and I'm sure he wasn't going to bring it up if I didn't.  Well, of course things got complicated there in the beginning due to things I don't want to get into, and it ended up looking like things weren't going to work out after all.

Then, one day he called me and asked if he could come over.  We talked again, all night, and went over a lot of things.  We both decided that we wanted to give "us" a try.

It was June 26, 2000.

Here we are, a dozen years later, starting the next chapter in our lives as "us."

Happy twelve years, Seattlean.  I can't think of a better way to celebrate, can you?  I'm sure glad that I told you that you could come over that night.  :)
