Waste Not

Don't you love when you find a new blog and it inspires you to revisit something you haven't done in a while? I sure do. I'm not sure how I came across it, but a couple of weeks ago I found one called Eileen Josephine. I've posted before that when I find a new blog, I like to read the whole thing. If I make it back to the oldest post and it holds my interest, I add it to my Google Reader.

It's kind of amazing to see how a person grows and changes over the years they keep their blog. In the earliest posts Lindsay posted about making her first quilt. Now she's blogging about starting her own long arm quilting business!

I mentioned in a previous post that I had made a baby quilt for a friend a few weeks ago. Well, I had a bunch of scraps left over, but that was just it - they were scraps. Definitely not enough to make a project on their own. I didn't want to let them go to waste though, so inspired by Lindsay's blog I dug around in my scrap pile and found some other fabrics that sort of went with them. I very poorly stitched them together, pretty much with no real pattern (you know how I love to just "wing" things!), and made a pillow cover for the boy.

I had this little travel pillow just hanging out in my craft room, so I aimed to make it fit that.

As you can see, I had to get sort of creative to make the patchwork big enough to cover it. The back is done in an envelope style so I can take it off and toss it in the wash. It's not quilted in any fancy sort of way - just a "stitch in the ditch" kind of thing. There are parts that are crooked and seams that don't quite meet up, but you know what? It has cars on it so the boy loves it, and that's all that matters. Also, I used up something that would have otherwise gone to waste, and that's always a good thing!
