There is no light fixture in the entryway to our house, so a month or two ago, I started to keep an eye open on my Goodwill outings for a lamp. One day, I happened upon this beauty:
What, you don't see it? You have to see past the fading gold lines painted on the glass. You have to see past the brassy finish that has almost completely worn away. You have to look past the white base of the light fixture that
doesn't quite match the base.
First of all, that glass base? That's milk glass! You know how I feel about milk glass. I also know that gold accents on milk glass were not only fairly popular back in the day, but that they also will scrub off. Sure it has no shade, but those are easily replaced. As for the metal parts? Well, that's why God invented spray paint!
Yes indeedy, I had plans for this lamp.
After looking around at a few places, buying a shade the wrong size and returning it, I finally found a shade I liked. After it was covered with fabric (there are
tons of tutorials online, but I just winged it because that's how I roll) I placed it on the base. Looking better already!
Well, of course it sat there like that for weeks before I finally got off my behind today to work on it. I very carefully taped off the parts I didn't want painted and busted out the can of
Krylon Premium Metallics Silver Foil spray paint.
(No, not paid to put that link there, just thought I'd share in case someone else wanted it)
Woo hoo for having a garage in which to paint!
I let it dry, replaced the shade, gave it a bulb, and
voila! A lamp in my entryway so we don't have to stumble inside to the kitchen for a light switch. Also, I don't think I'll be seeing one of these in anyone else's house!
I think the fabric I chose is much too warm for the bright white and silver of the base, so I will probably change that out in the future. For now I'll leave it alone because I do have about a billion other projects to do around here.
Oh, you see that reflection in the mirror?
My Easter wreath that I blogged about two days ago, but in my Ambien-induced lack of attention, forgot to add the photo to the post. Whoops! Don't blog while high kids. No es bueno.
