The Chair Project

I mentioned before that I found another old cheese dome at Goodwill. Since my husband was telecommuting today, that meant that the car was free. I decided to take advantage of this and hit the Goodwill in search of a candle holder to use as the base for my second cloche. At the first stop, I saw this chair:

Then I saw it's price tag.

Yeah. That chair came home with me. It's solid wood. The base is made of steel springs. It isn't even the slightest bit wobbly. I gave it the "sniff test" even. I'm not even gonna lie to you - I was so flipping scared to put my face near the upholstery, due to that germ-phobe/OCD thing, but I did it. It turns out it smelled fine - just a little like Goodwill. You know that smell. Nothing that Febreeze couldn't fix. Honestly, the only issue it had was a missing button on the tufting and that horrible green fabric.

So, later that night I had my husband stop at the Home Depot and buy one of these:

(stupid Blogger turning my pictures again)

A canvas painter's drop cloth. Nice, sturdy canvas. Flammable, but whatever, right? It was ten bucks.

I pulled out the scissors and the pins and got right to work.

Did I mention I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing here? I'll let you know how it turns out.

P. S. I never did find anything to use as a base for that cloche.

Having upholstered a bit in my day, 2 things:

1) That double cushion on the seat will be a little tricky if you're trying to retain the same shape.

2) You'll need a REALLY long needle to do the tufting.

Looks like a great start! Can't wait to see it. And so smart to use a drop cloth!

Oh my goodness, what a FIND. I'm so excited for you! I think the chair looks pretty damn fabulous in it's original state, but I'm also very impressed with your efforts to remake it. (Flammable ... you're funny.) Good luck!! I'm excited to see the finished product.
