In the Closet.

People like to think that I am very organized, and for the most part, they would be right. I firmly believe that everything should have a place and be in it. It saves a lot of headache and stress and makes things look nicer to boot. I totally practice what I preach, for the most part. My scrapbook room is a testament to that as well as my kitchen. There is one area where I do struggle, however...

This is my closet. As you can see, I'm lucky enough to have a decent sized closet. It's on the small end of being a walk in. I also have very nice wooden hangers as well as wooden shoe racks and a bookshelf for additional storage. I have NO EXCUSE for it being this way, other than I am lazy, lazy, lazy. That's why when I came across this:

on Vanessa Christenson's blog, I took it as a sign that it was time to tackle the beast. I'm going to post these before photos to properly give myself a public shaming, and then work on it over the next few days. When I'm done I'll post the after photos.

Top shelf: My wedding dress in a big Rubbermaid bin (isn't that terrible? I never got it cleaned), a mini backpack that we used to use on trips to the dog park, some travel toiletry bags, empty boxes that could be used for gifts one day, the box my diaper bag came in, some boots from when I was pole dancing, the most awesome shoes EVER from the same time period, a hat box with the hat from my lion tamer costume from two Halloweens ago, and messy hangers.

Clothes. Most of these I haven't worn in over two years, either because they don't fit my post baby body, or because I don't need to dress up for work anymore, or because I flat out no longer care for them. Oh, and what's that in the lower left corner of the photo?

A whole section of dog clothes on teeny hangers. These also don't see a lot of play due to Mr. Man joining the family.

The shelf has bags just shoved here and there as well as more dog clothes and various other odds and ends. The floor has a small green suitcase, my exercise ball, more dog stuff, a straw cowboy hat (that should be up on the top shelf!), shoes, shoes, and more shoes. Not pictured are the plastic drawers on the right top shelf full of sorority tee shirts waiting to be made into a quilt, some teacher books, and some scrapbooking organizers. There is also a tall Iris cart that serves as an organizer for socks, underwear, shorts, scarves, etc.

I've got my work cut out for me!

yes, we all have our dirty little secrets! My closet has totally changed since having the baby too. I had a whole rack of business clothing that I just packed up and now hubby gets a whole rack in the closet since my casual clothing can go in a drawer.
Good luck - I'm sure you'll make it look amazing!

Go, Sara! :) Since you have "good bones" in your closet (hangers, boxes, racks, etc.) this should be a doable project. It's just daunting when things are so out of place, but you'll get there. It's cool that you're doing this for yourself. It'll feel wonderful afterwards. Good luck with it. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I love closet makeovers. I did one for my brother a few years ago. He was newly divorced, living in a crappy apartment that he hated, sad as could be because he only had his kids half the time, and busier then ever with school and full time work. He was struggling to keep his head above water, and his closet was a mess. It was one thing that I could do something about. So, I did. A trip to the store for good hangers and a couple hours later, he had a space that felt orderly and looked gorgeous! It was so fun for me, and he appreciated it way more than he would have a traditional gift or a dinner out.

Also, I've been thinking about organizing my pantry for one of my August goals. I've been meaning to order the label maker you have for it. I think this post inspired me to follow through with that plan. It won't be until late August since I'm going to be out of town for a bit, but I'm thinking and planning now. I might even post it on V&Co's blog. Thanks for the idea!

I love closet updates! PS- My wedding dress is in the attic, dirty from the waist down (it poured on our wedding day) and hanging without even a bag over it in this 100-degree day heat! I keep saying I'll just throw it out or clean it and donate it but it's been 3 years!

I have my wedding dress too still in a rubber bin in the basement; never got it cleaned and boxed either. I also have the pre-baby clothes too that I'm sorting through right now; already gave a bunch of bags to charity and it feels so great! Good luck with this. You can do it!
