Pillowcase Apron, Part One

Yesterday, I mentioned that I made this apron from an old pillowcase.

Please pardon the unflattering self portrait. Ahem. I sewed some pink buttons on there, but I don't think I like them and plan to remove them. Other than that, I really like this apron! It was super easy to make, requires no pattern, and you only have to sew in straight lines. I sort of made this up as I went along and had no major issues with it. It took just a few hours to do and is a perfect beginning sewing project.

All you need is an old pillowcase! Well, and your sewing machine, thread, an iron, and a sewing gauge or ruler or something like that. Since there are so many tiny steps, and I wanted to be sure that everything was as clear as possible, I'm breaking this up into three posts so that I don't kill anyone's Internet connection with photos.

First, you're going to turn that pillowcase inside out and carefully cut off the seams. Just cut off where there is serged sewing along the two edges. Leave the big hem that was the opening of the pillowcase alone.

Open up your fabric and iron it flat.

Cut three five inch wide strips parallel to the wide hem. They should be just over a yard long. The exact length doesn't really matter, as long as they are five inches wide.

Take two of those five inch wide strips and fold them in half so that the wrong side is showing. Press them with an iron to get a strong crease. These will be the ties for the apron. Leave the last strip flat. That will be the waistband. I know it looks weird, but trust me!

Tomorrow - pleats!
