Like going from a carved tablet to a computer monitor

This is my cell phone.

I got it about five and a half years ago, a few months before we got married. I had owned my previous cell phone for almost three years, and I was so excited to upgrade. When I got it, I ordered a bunch of flat-backed Swarovski crystals online and promptly glued them to the front of the phone. Hey, it was 2003 and that's what people were doing, okay? LOL!

Well, the years came and went and my contract was up but not renewed because I was waiting for T-Mobile to come out with a phone that I liked. I mean, there's no point in getting locked into a contract for a phone you hate, right? Cool phones came and went on other networks, but on T-Mobile, it was the same bottom of the barrel stuff as always. At one point, I considered the Blackberry Pearl, but then Verizon came out with it in pink, so I thought I'd hold out and see if my carrier would get it in pink as well. (Didn't happen) T-Mobile thanked me for my perseverance with a letter telling me that I was in the top 5% of people who had been with them longest. I had been with them for over NINE YEARS and was barely on my third handset which at the point when I received the letter, was already five years old.

So, you know that picture of my phone? I guess you should say that it WAS my phone, up until Tuesday afternoon. That's when the FedEx lady brought me this:

I am no longer a cell phone dinosaur! I am not only up to modern times as far as my cellular technology is concerned, I am, dare I say it, one of the cool kids! No more getting lost on the way to playgroups. No more having to call my husband at work so he could check online for the nearest whatever I am looking for while I'm out. No more messing with T9 while text messaging. No more thinking, oh, I should TOTALLY tweet this when I get home, only to forget.

The best part? After the discount that my husband gets through his employer, our service only went up $15 a month. That's it! Since we cancelled our Blockbuster Online membership in favor of using those Redboxes (there are always free codes online for those things), they'll totally cancel out.

So, sorry T-Mobile. It was a nice run while it lasted. Nine years was not bad, but it was time for me to move on.

So tell me, iPhone users who read my blog, what apps do I absolutely HAVE to have? So far I only have Facebook, Tweetdeck, and Whole Foods Recipes, which totally rocks, by the way.

I have Shopper (makes shopping lists and you can check the items off as you put them in your cart. AND put in prices so that you can do comparison shopping).

Pandora and Slacker - internet radio (both free)

Lose It! - a weight loss tracking thingy where you put in your food intake and exercise and it counts your calories etc.

Just Light - free flashlight app (if you're like us and use the light from your phone's display to find your way to the bed or bathroom at night. LOL)

And I've got a few toddler games on mine that were free for my 3 year old.

That's about all I've put on (besides Facebook and Twitterfon) so far besides a couple of games my other son likes.

Have to agree with kingsqueen and tell you to get the Pandora app (free internet radio). You can type in an artist and it creates a radio station for you of that artist and other similar artists. This is also great if you have an infant/toddler like mine who already picks anything technological over her own toys (seriously, picks the iPhone over keys, regular cell phone, daddy's shiny watch, or any other toy). My daughter will dance to the music and enjoy staring at the screen (have to keep touching the screen to make it stay bright though).

Another one that my family gets a kick out of is the is an app called SmackTalk. This one costs 99 cents but it is funny and cute. You get two different kinds of puppies, a kitten, and what I think is a guinea pig (gerbil may??). Basically, what makes it so cute is that it repeats whatever you say in this cutsey voice. I pop it open to show friends and they usually laugh their butts off and want to play with it for a few minutes. Again, my 13 month old LOVES it. And, I think it is adorable to hear her cute laugh replayed in the kitten or puppies squeaky voices.

Try Kindle or Stanza for books (you can find some free ebooks that you can read from your iPhone which is great when you are sitting somewhere bored or just taking a long bathroom break and want something to read).

Google Earth is pretty neat. Sudoku Daily if you like Sudoku (but you only get one puzzle a day). Loopt if you know other iPhone users and you want to play around with tracking each other (only works if both of you have the app open on your iPhone so really, it is only cool to use a few times).

My husband has a few other apps on his phone. Several games, etc. I do believe he has an app (not sure if it was free) that is called Trainer Lite or something like that. This is great if you like to run. It will track how fast you are going, how long you are going, and your distance. It will even show you a GPS map of the route you took.
