The Goodwill Giveth, and The Goodwill Taketh Away

Today was 50% off day at Goodwill, so the family and I decided to hit a few today and see if we could find any treasures. Here are a few of my favorite finds:

Gray placemats, brand spanking new (check out the price tag!), set of eight.

That's right - I paid thirty-five cents each for them. Not too shabby!

Silver plated, footed serving dish. The glass comes out so you can bake whatever, then present it nicely without worrying that the hot dish will ruin your table. This was $6.50

Another milk glass dish to go with the four in my china hutch. One dollar!

A set of Italian Cheese knives from Williams Sonoma, brand new in the box. One is missing, but for $1.50, I can live without it.

This game. I've seen the cards before, and even used them in my decorating, but had no idea what they were from. Ashley from Domestic Fashionista finally clued me in and I've been on the hunt ever since.
I just wanted these letter cards. They sell them for a quarter each at the scrapbook store in downtown Mesa, but I got the whole set for $1.50. That seemed to be the magic number today!

I found this adorable alphabet canvas for two dollars. I could not believe it.

I also got this shoe rack for two dollars. I set it right outside the garage door to help keep the shoes tidy.

Yet another vintage cookbook. I'm a sucker.

Ah... nice and old.

I picked up a few other books too.

No way I was passing this one up for fifty cents in hardcover. This will go great with this, this and this that are already in my collection.

My best find of the day came in the form of a metal patio table with a glass top. The top was perfect - no cracks and only one teeny chip on an edge that was hardly noticeable. The frame had a little tiny bit of rust near a couple of joints, but nothing that a little sandpaper, primer and paint wouldn't fix. Best part - the bright orange sticker that said $14.99.

Are you freaking kidding me??? This table was four feet wide! Since it was half off day I was going to get it for SEVEN FREAKING DOLLARS!!! I was so excited because I've been wanting a table for our back patio since we moved in, but those suckers are expensive! The only issue we were having was that the table would not fit in our SUV while the carseat was in there. The back seats would have to be folded down for it to fit. The Goodwill employee told us that it was no problem - we could pay for it them come back to pick it up before close. I was a bit apprehensive about that and asked my husband if we could at least take the top, but he said there was no way it would fit.

All the way home I debated what color to paint the frame, setting on a nice bright yellow. At the next Goodwill I found the placemats, perfect to keep my porcelain dishes from cracking on the hard glass surface. The gray would look beautiful with the yellow! I got home and moved the faux wicker chairs over to the other end of the patio to make room for our new acquisition while my husband went to go pick it up from the store. I was practically giddy with happiness over my lucky seven dollar find.

Well, my husband came home but the table didn't. Apparently someone did something in the back room and shattered the top. To say I was livid was an understatement. I almost cried I was so disappointed. They wanted to know if we wanted to go ahead and take the base anyway or just have them give us a refund. A quick perusal of the internet revealed that a replacement top would be over $150 and that's just not in our budget for a non-essential item.

It's a good thing my husband went and not me, let's just say that. I'm so pissed because I had a feeling they would break it, which is why I wanted to take that part with us. Grrr!!!

My husband felt bad for me and said if I could find one at a yard sale for under $50 I could get it. That was a bummer to me because I don't get up early enough to score anything good at yard sales. Then I remembered Craigslist. Most of the tables and patio sets on there were way out of my price range, but I did find one that would work - and it was $50. My husband called and it was still available, so hopefully we will have a patio table tomorrow after all. It will have cost a lot more than the first one, but at least this one will have chairs.

You always find the best stuff. You inspire me to hit the thrift store, but I never find anything good! Love those letter cards. I had no idea they were from a game. Bummer about the table. good luck getting the craigslist one!

So jealous... You find the best stuff. I am too OCD to even go into our Goodwill anymore.

What a great day of scoring (minus the tragedy with the patio table, of course)! Those Williams Sonoma cookbooks are GREAT--we have the 'Vegetable' one you showed, also 'Soup' and 'Salad.' Fantastic recipes that are always in rotation over here. :)

Wow, Sara. More great finds. You are a machine. And you make all these pieces work so beautifully together. So, when is half price day?

I wish my Goodwills were as good as yours! And I had to laugh as I just picked up that book at the library!
