Birthday Recap

With the exception of a badly ending trip to the library (seriously people, if you don't want to pay fines return your books on time, don't argue with the librarian for 20 minutes and hold up the line!) and when I accidentally split the tip of my big toe trying to kick the bug (I'm a genius!) that flew into our car, yesterday was pretty laid back. My husband made us dinner - Japanese Curry, yum! - and I baked a cake after all.

Red velvet with cream cheese icing.

I went simple with this one, since it was just for me. It's a six inch round so we won't find ourselves eating cake for a week.

We have plans to go out for dinner as a family this weekend, to bring Birthday Week to a close.

Yesterday I actually got up, combed my hair, and did my makeup beyond my usual smears of cream and taupe eyeshadow with mascara. I'm so used to looking at the grubby Sara who doesn't bother to do this anymore because I don't leave the house that I hardly recognize myself in this photo. That's terrible.

My awesome mother in law sent me the set of alphabet cookie cutters that I've been wanting. She also sent a Microplane box grater which I promptly used to shred some cheese for cheese cracker dough. It's SUCH an improvement over my old crappy grater!

That trifle dish I got last weekend for $2 at the Goodwill. Kick butt. I just need to decide what to put in it.

My husband got me this:
It hasn't come in the mail yet, but he showed me. My first instinct was to totally freak out because in all honesty we can not afford a $300 pot, no matter how much I loved it or how awesome and beautiful and long (a lifetime!!!) it will last. He told me that at his ten year review for work he got a gift certificate for Amazon that covers the cost of this, with enough left over to get the popsicle molds too! Y'all, I'm so freaking excited! I can't wait for this to get here so I can just admire it because I didn't think it would be mine any time soon.

Now I just need it to be fall so I can start making some soups and stews in this bad boy!
